Each update of iOS devices includes things like security, user-interface and emojis which change and alter for the preferences of the iOS user. The emojis belong to the Apple Colour Emoji font which is owned and copyrighted by Apple, yet the word emoji is universal and not owned by anyone.

Because emojis are universal, platforms such as Android and Facebook have created their own versions of the emoji. Sony have also taken the colourful and entertaining images and made use of them, this time in a movie which was released in August 2017.

So how can you make the most of these colourful little images? It seems that most of our social media platforms are including the use of emoji, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. They all have a range of emoji that will fit your post and characterise your message. According to AdHawk Blog (2016) 92% of the population are using emojis in their messaging, so why wouldn’t you use it in your communications? When a written language is not understood by everyone, emojis are a universal language that can be recognised throughout the world.

Emoji in your email marketing

Email marketing is one of the best places to use emojis. It can ensure that your messages stand out from the rest and they help to create feelings associated with your messaging, not to mention they’re great fun. Try using one or two in your subject line, this will help your subject stand out from the rest. Using the odd emoji in your email text will keep it interesting and grab attention.

Emoji in your social media

Social media is a more informal, relationship building platform. However, there is a lot of noise that you need to process through to make sure that your messages are breaking through and catching the attention of your target audience. There are plenty of ways to do this: making it short and sharp, personalisation of text, and a colourful image. Relate the emoji to your social media post to include that added value.

Emoji in your website

Now here is one platform that emoji won’t necessarily pay off. Your website should already include a lot of colour and images. It is also a more corporate platform that people use to scope out your company. Adding emojis would possibly dis-enhance the use of your website text and images, while creating a less reliable company website presence.

Things to remember:

  • Emojis are great when they are used to create an emotive aspect to your message. However, try not to use them excessively as they then complicate your text and distract the reader from the overall goal of the message.

  • Sometimes emojis cannot be added from a browser, so in some instances you may need to add an emoji into a message via a mobile device.
